Sky News host Chris Kenny says Labor Leader Anthony Albanese’s pledge to raise wages by 5.5 per cent has gone from an election promise to “merely an objective”.
Mr Kenny said the opposition leader’s wages push would make just 0.4 per cent of a difference to wages as inflation currently sits at 5.1 per cent, and Mr Albanese later changed to advocate for a 5.1 per cent pay rise.
“That’s not a wage rise; in real terms, it’s nothing but keeping up with a huge jump in inflation; what would it do if he had that pay rise float right through the system, if it spread right across the economy,” he said. “Still, the Labor Leader has stopped short of advocating for even an additional 0.4 per cent pay rise in real terms for the lowest-paid workers, which kind of puts his promise for higher wages into some context doesn’t it.”
