A new Essential poll reveals divided public opinion on how Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Opposition Leader Peter Dutton handle pressure and key issues like antisemitism. Parliament returns with these issues set to dominate the political agenda ahead of the May election.

More than half of Australian voters (52%) believe Prime Minister Anthony Albanese struggles to handle pressure, compared to only 40% who hold the same view about Opposition Leader Peter Dutton . This finding emerges from a recent Essential poll conducted last week among 1,150 Australians, revealing a divided public opinion on how both leaders are navigating key issues.

Parliament is set to return on Tuesday for what could be the final sitting fortnight before the federal election, which must be held by mid-May. Antisemitism in Australia and the alleged discovery of a caravan bomb in Sydney are expected to dominate the political agenda, with Australians expressing mixed views on Albanese's response to the antisemitism issue. While 43% believe the government hasn't done enough, 39% feel it has done enough or even too much. The poll also highlights a perception gap between the two leaders. 63% of voters believe Albanese is out of touch with ordinary Australians, compared to 55% who hold the same view about Dutton. This represents a significant decline in Albanese's favorability since coming to power in May 2022, when only 47% of Australians felt he was out of touch. Dutton, on the other hand, has seen a gradual improvement in this perception, with 61% of people believing he was out of touch in March 2023, and 59% in July 2024. The poll paints a picture of two leaders vying for public approval, each facing distinct challenges. While Albanese grapples with perceptions of being out of touch and struggling under pressure, Dutton seeks to capitalize on these weaknesses while navigating his own image as perceived as aggressive. The upcoming election will undoubtedly test their mettle and determine the future direction of Australia
