Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has warned shutting the border to Indonesia would affect two-way trade and declared the federal government has introduced the “strongest ever” measures to keep foot and mouth disease out of Australia.
Asked if Australia should shut the border, Albanese said that “if we do that ... then there of course will be a response”.“What we’re trying to avoid is an impact, by definition, on our trade. And you don’t do that by just jumping to a position that the former government never ever implemented, [that] no Coalition government has implemented,” he said.
A $14 million assistance package has also been put in place to stop foot and mouth disease from entering Australia from Bali or other parts of Indonesia. One positive case of foot and mouth disease, which causes lesions and lameness in livestock, could shut down the $27 billion live export trade and a major outbreak could cost the industry $80 billion.
