Despite the Senator's act of rebellion, it initially appeared there would be no punishment handed down by Labor leadership, with the party releasing a statement saying there was" Opposition Leader Peter Dutton had sought to corner the Prime Minister over Senator Payman's past use of the controversial pro-Palestine phrase"from the river to the sea", suggesting former Labor leader Bob Hawke had moved to expel members who chose to cross the floor without the additional tension created by the Senator's advocacy.
The Prime Minister then moved to address Senator Payman's decision, saying he had come to a new position in contrast to Labor's earlier statement.
