Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has leapt to the defence of his beloved South Sydney Rabbitohs’ fullback Latrell Mitchell after he came under fire for an appearance at the Koori Knockout on the weekend.

Mitchell's surprise appearance at the carnival came despite the Rabbitohs withdrawing him from Kangaroos' selection because of a finger injury.

“Latrell Mitchell is a proud, Indigenous Australian. The Koori Knockout has a great history and people even after they’ve retired, I’m not sure whether GI played on the weekend or not,” he said. “Look, it’s a fantastic celebration of First Nations people and at a time when First Nations people are the focus for the nation because of the referendum.

This year Jack Wighton, Josh Addo-Carr and former NRL stars Ben Barba and George Rose were among the stars playing.“I play for my country because I love it,” he wrote. The Rabbitohs fiercely defended Mitchell’s involvement claiming he was only on the field for 10 minutes and did not train for the tournament held on the Central Coast.
