Anthony Albanese has delivered a keynote speech to kick-off the 2023 Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, promoting the valuability of defence and security ties while also underlining how conflict can be prevented.
The PM told 600 delegates across more than 40 countries and regions that describing the region as a “potential ‘theatre’ for conflict” is “dangerously wrong.”“To move from imagining conflict is impossible to assuming war is inevitable, is just as harmful to our shared goals,” Mr Albanese said.
Mr Albanese also spoke of the importance of opening dialogues with China, praising the Biden administration’s efforts to “establish reliable and open channels of communication” with the country. “In Australia, our Government has put dialogue at the heart of our efforts to stabilise our relationship with China. We’re not naïve about this process, or its limitations. We recognise there are fundamental differences in our two nations’ systems of government, our values and our worldviews.
The AUKUS agreement on defence between Australia, the United Kingdom and United States was also addressed. The Prime Minister was invited by The International Institute for Strategic Studies in February to deliver the address on Friday. The two discussed bilateral trade, food security and exports and preparations to finalise the Australia Singapore Food Pact which was announced last year.
