Anthony Albanese has embarked upon his longest and most intense period of international travel since becoming prime minister: a nine-day journey through Asia that will include three high-level summits and a flurry of bilateral meetings with some of the world’s most powerful leaders.

Australia, he said, will demonstrate to its closest neighbours that it will bring a “calm, mature and collaborative approach to international relations”. Russian President Vladimir Putin has decided not to travel to Bali, removing the possibility of tense encounters with leaders furious with him for invading Ukraine.The trip will conclude in Thailand with the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Bangkok.

Asia Society Australia executive director of policy Richard Maude warns the Chinese are likely to keep Australia guessing until the last minute about whether a meeting with Xi will take place or not.
