Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has faced increasing pressure to elaborate on claims suggesting foreign actors may be financing antisemitic violence within Australia. While authorities are actively investigating these allegations, the Prime Minister remains tight-lipped, prioritizing ongoing investigations and urging against compromising the work of law enforcement. Meanwhile, opposition figures are demanding clearer answers and labeling the situation as potential 'state-sponsored terrorism'.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has faced mounting pressure to provide further details regarding claims that foreign agents may be involved in sponsoring antisemitic violence. After a meeting, Australian Federal Police Commissioner Reece Kershaw revealed that local offenders may be funded by foreign actors with cryptocurrency.

Senior opposition figures have since called for clearer explanations, while the Prime Minister has refused to give details, insisting ongoing investigations were the priority.Prime Minister Anthony Albanese addressed media in Sydney on the antisemitic attacks. Picture: NewsWire/ Gaye Gerard Deputy Opposition Leader Sussan Ley told Sky News on Wednesday the claims amounted to “state-sponsored terrorism”. “I'm incredibly concerned and all Australians would be if foreign actors … are involved in the antisemitic violence that we're seeing on our streets,” she said. “If these incidents are linked to state-sponsored terrorism… then far more needs to be done. Better explanations need to be given to Australian people. The Prime Minister was pressed on the details regarding the investigation into foreign actors paying for antisemitic crimes in cryptocurrency but did not give any information. Mr Albanese defended his government's response, stressing that police efforts were ongoing and that it was crucial to avoid compromising the work of authorities. He noted that the AFP was working closely with state police and intelligence agencies, and that arrests have been made. “The AFP commissioner has provided more information about the investigations that have occurred,” he told reporters. “But of course those investigations are ongoing. I'm reluctant to say anything that compromises those investigations.' Mr Albanese later admitted there was unclear information about the foreign actors sponsoring crimes in Australia. “It's unclear who or where the payments are coming from. The AFP commissioner will continue to do his job as the head of Operation Avalite,” he said. The AFP has begun investigations on at least 15 serious antisemitic incidents under Operation Avalite. The special task force was only established in December 2024, shortly after a firebombing attack at a Melbourne synagogue. 'People are being arrested. They're being charged, and they're still in the clink because they're being denied bail,' Mr Albanese said.National Cabinet met virtually today to reaffirm that Leaders are united in working together to stamp antisemitism out – and keep it out.The Prime Minister also addressed the political criticism, blaming the opposition for failing to take necessary action during their time in government. “We have acted. We have established the first envoy on antisemitism that could have been done by the former government,' Mr Albanese said. The Israel-Hamas War, which has stoked division in the community, began on October 7, 2023 after the Albanese government came into power. Education Minister Jason Clare echoed Mr Albanese’s sentiments and told Sky News he rejected claims that the government had been slow to act. Mr Clare pointed to the $25 million allocated to the Jewish community just two weeks after the October 7th Hamas attacks. The federal response to antisemitic crime has raised the profile of law and order as an issue for voters leading into the next election. Crime and order recently ranked fifth of the 16 priorities voters were concerned about ahead of the federal election, to be held on or before May 17 Mr Albanese and Mr Clare both expressed concerns about political exploitation of the issue, with the Prime Minister accusing the opposition of seeking'political advantage'
