Australian leaders have united in support of Evan Gershkovich, the US journalist detained in Russia.

Australian leaders have united to call for the release of Evan Gershkovich, the Wall Street Journal reporter wrongly imprisoned in Russia under espionage charges.Mr Gershkovich, The Wall Street Journal’s Moscow correspondent, has been imprisoned since March 2023, falsely accused of espionage.

The campaign has already received responses from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Leader of the Opposition Peter Dutton, former prime ministers Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott, as well as business leaders, journalists, and sports stars. We urge you to stay strong and we stand with the United States as the Biden Administration works to secure your release.Journalism sits at the core of liberal values – freedom of expression and the public’s right to know.

The arrest took place just days after The Wall Street Journal published an article by Gershkovich titled “Russia’s economy is beginning to crumble”.The Russian Federal Security Service issued a statement in which it said: “Gershkovich, following instructions from the United States, collected information constituting a state secret about the activities of one of the enterprises of the Russian military-industrial complex”.

During a bizarre interview between Tucker Carlson and Vladimir Putin last month, the Russian President declined a request to release Gershkovich as an act of goodwill. Putin hinted at a prisoner swap involving a Russian man imprisoned in a “US-allied country” detained for “liquidating a bandit”.Krasikov was also reported as being involved in prison swap discussions for Alexei Navalny, the detained Russian opposition leader who died under suspicious circumstances in February.

All efforts by the international community to secure the journalist’s release have collided with the Kremlin wall.
