Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is facing accusations that he possibly used taxpayer funds to “create the opportunity” to attend a barbecue with Melbourne billionaire Lindsay Fox and Premier Daniel Andrews.

The purpose of the long-lunch and its existence has been kept under a veil of secrecy, with the Coalition piling on further pressure over concerns the Prime Minister chose to dine with billionaires over visiting flood-stricken communities in Western Australia.

“It looks like the Prime Minister used taxpayer funds to make sure that he was in Geelong to catch a private helicopter trip to a billionaire’s mansion to have a barbecue,” Ms Ley told 5AA radio on Friday. Ms Ley dismissed Mr Albanese’s defence and argued Australians deserved “answers” on the nature of the “gift” of travel to the Fox’s Portsea compound.

“But you know, who he chooses to have barbecues with and whether they're billionaires and what message that sends to workers, you know, I'll leave that for others to judge. But the question here is the use of taxpayers’ money and the lack of transparency.”
