The Albanese government is under fire for failing to boost housing construction, with data showing dwelling approvals are already 30 per cent behind what is required to meet the government’s ambitious target.

Shadow housing minister Michael Sukkar also hit out at the government, telling SkyNews.com.au the approvals data “proves Labor’s 1.2 million homes promise isn’t worth the paper the media release was printed on.” Federal Housing Minister Clare O’Neil defended the government’s housing strategy, telling SkyNews.com.au construction of new homes was “at a near decade low” when Labor took office and it would take some time for the government to meet it’s target.

This includes the introduction of fee-free TAFE courses, with 21,000 Australians already taking up construction-related courses. As well as a $90 million skills package to support an additional 20,000 people in vocational training for jobs in the housing and construction sector.
