Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has drawn parallels between his own visit to Beijing this week and Gough Whitlam’s visit 50 years ago.
The Prime Minister will be meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss the remaining trade tariffs on Monday night. “This is commemorating 50 years since Prime Minister Whitlam came to China to recognise the first visit by an Australian prime minister to China,” Mr Albanese said during a media conference on Tuesday.
Mr Albanese said he is taking the opportunity to “retrace the steps” of former prime minister Whitlam by visiting the Temple of Heaven. “We need to cooperate with China where can, disagree where we must and engage in our national interest.”
