Anthony Albanese has met with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, the highest level face-to-face encounter between an Australian prime minister and Chinese leader for three years.
The White House has said Biden – who enters the meeting with Albanese on a high after confirmation the Democrats have– would consult America’s closest allies and partners on the issues they would like him to raise with Xi in their meeting, their first since Biden’s inauguration. Albanese’s informal discussion with Li, during a gala dinner at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit in Cambodia, is a precursor to a possible meeting later this week with President Xi.
The prime minister’s office said Albanese and Li spoke about the upcoming 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and Australia among other topics during the encounter, which was capturedLi sent Albanese a message of congratulations after his May election victory, seen as an initial move to try to stabilise the Australia-China relationship after years of turbulence.
