Anthony Albanese emerged from a bilateral meeting with Indonesian President Joko Widodo to express concern about a backlog of visa applications that could hurt the two economies.

, Albanese and Joko committed to regional security ties, with the Indonesian leader emphasising the need for a “culture of peace and strategic trust” but with neither leader naming China in their joint remarks.“Strategic competition in the region must be well-managed to avoid open conflict. The culture of peace and strategic trust needs to be strengthened continuously.”

“If a business leader who wants to come and engage with Australia has more difficulty getting into Australia than a near neighbour, then we’re at a competitive disadvantage. That’s something that we’re really suffering from across the board,” Albanese said. Albanese said he would attend the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Bali in November “because the work of the G20 is critical at this time of global economic uncertainty”.

China has become increasingly assertive in its claims over a vast swathe of the South China Sea and while Jakarta insistsLoading “The G20 meeting means an awful lot to Indonesia and Jokowi personally. To be the chair reflects Indonesia’s image of itself as an emerging global player and if Australia had failed to attend it would have been read as a slap in the face for Jakarta,” he said.

Albanese said the business leaders would “be at the vanguard of a sustained campaign by Australian Government and business to seize these opportunities”.
