The Opposition Leader said he planned to tie extra cash to the delivery of better health care for older Australians and hit out at the Morrison government for its lack of action as some aged care residents are forced to go without showers and meals.
, saying a policy to give them away free would be subject to “limits based upon the health advice”.
“What you’ve had from this government is a ‘let it rip’ approach when it comes to the market delivering and the market hasn’t delivered,” Mr Albanese told the ABC.He also gave his backing to aged care workers in the wage case before the Fair Work Commission, in which aged care providers and unions have reached consensus on the increased complexity and value of aged care work.
“But the big missing piece in this workforce, we still don’t have a commitment to have a nurse in a nursing home. We still don’t have a commitment to increase in terms of other care workers in aged care, and we still don’t have a commitment to increases in wages and conditions so that aged care facilities are able to attract the staff.
Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt said Mr Albanese’s comments had shown he was “making it up, with no plan for managing the pandemic”.
