Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has refused to 'foreshadow' when the government will use its new preventative detention powers, as he sought to dismiss criticism over his Ministers' handling of released immigration detainees.

Anthony Albanese has dismissed questions about the government's handling of released immigration detainees, insisting it would use new powers"as soon as possible" as he defended the Ministers responsible for overseeing the issue.Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has refused to"foreshadow" when the government will use its new preventative detention powers, as he sought to dismiss criticism over his Ministers' handling of released immigration detainees.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Mr Albanese was subjected to a barrage of questions about the government's handling of the case, particularly in light of the fact it has yet to make use of emergency powers enacted in December last year which were designed to prevent the release of detainees who posed a major threat to community safety.

"The law that was passed last December was based upon the previous government's legislation on terrorist offenders, that took a long time to bring a case to bear based upon proper legal advice," he explained. "When it comes to legal processes it's always best to make announcements when they're happening rather than foreshadow them, something that is good practice, and I want to see it happen as a matter of urgency."

Others have also pointed to the fact that despite a commitment to comprehensively monitor those released, many detainees have not been required to wear ankle bracelets and that other proposed surveillance measures were not being universally enforced.
