The Albanese government has rejected three high-level requests from Ukraine to help fight Russian cyber warfare, Sky News host Sharri Markson reveals.
Security sources told Ms Markson that Russia is using cyber intelligence to target their missile strikes and Ukraine’s critical infrastructure.
Former foreign affairs minister Marise Payne met in person with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba early last year, and it was gathered Australia would help Ukraine; however, it appears the Albanese government has now walked away from this commitment. “We always carefully consider requests for assistance from the Ukrainian Government,” Assistant Foreign Affairs Minister Tim Watts wrote in a rejection letter to the Ukrainian government on March 6, 2023.
“I note your interest in further developing cooperation between Ukraine and Australia in the field of cyber and critical infrastructure, including within the framework of the counter Ransomware initiative. “While we are not in a position to provide direct funding for cyber security-related initiatives at this time, we see great value in progressing the bilateral Cyber Policy Dialogue between Ukrainian and Australian officials, initiating in 2022, to facilitate the sharing of expertise and experience.”

Freedom and security in Australia should ‘never’ be taken ‘for granted’: AlbaneseAustralians should “never” take their freedom and security within the nation “for granted”, says Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. “We must acknowledge the truth that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who donned the khaki fought for more for Australia, than Australia was willing to fight for them,” Mr Albanese said during the Dawn Service in Canberra. “Yet we learn, and we keep taking steps forward together – Australians have gone overseas for us, they have gone because there is so much to fight for. “What we have created as Australians, and nurtured over generations is something we must never take for granted.”
