The government intends to legislate an anti-corruption commission by the end of the year, despite the PM’s mixed messages.

Pushing the republic so soon after the death of Queen Elizabeth II will do the cause more harm than good, Anthony Albanese believes, as he continues to dead bat calls to debate Australia’s future constitutional make-up.

The government later clarified the plan remained to pass the legislation through both houses before Parliament rises on December 1. “The Prime Minister doesn’t stop people considering such matters, and my position on that hasn’t changed. It’s been my position for a long period of time, and it’s the position of the Australian Labor Party,” he said.

“The priority in terms of constitutional change is recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in our Constitution. I’ve made that very clear prior to the election,” he said.“It’s inconceivable to me you would have a debate on an Australian head of state before you had recognised Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Our history didn’t begin in 1788.”

Independent Zoe Daniel said Mr Albanese could expedite the process by releasing the draft legislation now, so it could be perused in advance of the sittings the week after next. But the teals’ votes do not count in the lower house and the Labor leadership is conscious that its own MPs be able to see the legislation first, when caucus meets during the next sitting week. There was some unrest previously when the teals were shown the climate change target legislation ahead of the Labor backbench.
