Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has addressed speculation that President Xi Jinping has invited him to Beijing later this year, following a report in a Chinese newspaper.

“I have read this and I did check with my office. I have said that dialogue is a good thing,” he said on Wednesday.

President Xi Jinping and Mr Albanese first met on the sidelines of the G20 in Indonesia last November - which was the first meeting of its kind since 2016. Mr Albanese reiterated the important meeting during his remarks on Wednesday, saying he would go to China if invited. Adding fuel to the fire, the Morrison government was vocal on the international stage about the need for an investigation into the origins of COVID-19.
