The prime minister is putting aside his republican views to pledge allegiance to King Charles III to honour 'the system of government we have', but believes the day will come when Australia stands on its own two feet.

"I want to see an Australian as Australia's head of state. That doesn't mean that you can not have respect for the institution, which is the system of government that we have," he said. Mr Albanese said he held no qualms about making the pledge to a sovereign he ultimately does not believe should be Australia's head of state.
Mr Albanese said refusing to pledge allegiance to King Charles would create 'a controversy' Australians wouldn't expect from him.
