Anthony Albanese believes NATO members would be aware China has been 'more forward-leaning' in the Pacific but said the unified international response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine will concern President Xi Jinping.
Beijing has increased its reach into the Indo-Pacific with a series of support and security agreements in recent years, most notably a security deal with the Solomon Islands, which could see a military base established less than 2,000km from Australia.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says the international response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine will worry China as it advances in the Pacific. Picture: Martin Ollman “To ensure that when something happens like the invasion of Ukraine, the world is prepared to stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and provide practical and real support.”
He was asked by a reporter about the importance of consistent and long term pressure on Russia amid a suggestion Chinese President Xi Jinping would"relent" and wait it out too if he was to invade Taiwan. “What Vladimir Putin has done with this invasion is to unify NATO and to unify democratic nations against this action … So what this invasion has done is far from weaken NATO, it’s actually strengthened it.”
The Prime Minister did not reveal whether a new support package had been developed but said Australia was the largest non-NATO contributor in the defence of Ukraine.
