Jacinta Price accuses Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of avoiding engagement with Northern Territory residents during his recent visit.

Jacinta Price accuses Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of being 'reluctant' to engage with NT locals as latest visit snubbed Alice Springs. Shadow Indigenous Australians minister Jacinta Price has said Anthony Albanese was “reluctant” to speak with locals in the Northern Territory despite the Prime Minister spruiking his recent visits to the Top End.

The Labor leader defended the timetable, pointing to stops in a host of locations including Kununurra in Western Australia and Cairns in Queensland as well as a visit to a cattle station in the NT. “I have been to the NT 12 times as Prime Minister. That is more times than the three previous prime ministers went during what was almost a decade,” Mr Albanese told journalists. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has been accused of snubbing Northern Territory locals with shadow Indigenous Australians minister Jacinta Price calling out the Labor leader for being'reluctant'. Picture: Gera Kazakov Ms Price also accused the Prime Minister of “playing catch up” after the Northern Territory and Queensland elections swung out of Labor’s favour'. Picture: ABC Mr Albanese was in Darwin over Christmas to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the destructive Cyclone Tracey. However, Senator Price said the Prime Minister’s latest visit to the Northern Territory, during which he avoided Alice Springs, was a sign of him “taking the easy path, as he always has”. Ms Price said Mr Albanese's visits to the Northern Territory focussed on events such as the Garma Festival which she claimed was a “Labor sort of love fest” and “really safe ground”. “He's very reluctant and has been reluctant to actually speak to the locals on the ground,” Ms Price told Sky News host James Morrow on Thursday. “The other thing that the Prime Minister likes to do, and like what Labor love to do, is sit down with heads of organisations consistently as opposed to the people that you know are served by these organisations. The shadow minister said the Country Liberal Party government and Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro had acted swiftly on crime since taking power and had targeted dozens of offenders with outstanding warrants. The new Chief Minister has said there was “plenty on the table” to drive down the “horrific levels of crime” plaguing the Northern Territory. “We can’t sit around and wait for the federal government to wake up and have an epiphany, and that’s why my government is making sure that our laws meet community expectation and put the rights of the people to be safe above the rights of offenders,” she said last year. Ms Finocchiaro stormed to victory in mid-2024 which was followed by the LNP’s decisive win in Queensland a few months later. Senator Price said Mr Albanese’s whirlwind trip to the NT and Queensland was a sign he was trying to close the political gap ahead of the federal election set to take place in the next few months, accusing the Prime Minister of'playing catch-up' following Labor's election losses.“It feels as though he's now playing catch up in places that he knows that he has to do a lot more work. “But Territorians aren't fools, they're not happy, they're not just happy with the crime issue, but they're really unhappy with the cost of living crisis.” Ms Price said all Australians were being troubled by the cost of living crisis, but the Northern Territory was particularly struggling due to the combined issue of spiralling crime. “It's not just Alice Springs that are disappointed. It's Katherine, it's Creek, It's other towns in the Northern Territory that would love to be heard by the Prime Minister,” she said
