OPINION: Anthony Albanese couldn’t have hoped for a better opening to his Prime Ministership as he emphasise a change of government did not mean a change in Australia’s values, its approach to China or the importance of the Quad.
Joe Biden jovially acknowledged the exhausting timing of the Quad meeting for a new prime minister just off the campaign trail, but the immediacy of the Tokyo gathering could not have worked better for Anthony Albanese.
his abruptly elevated status in Australia’s public consciousness. It is like an international ceremonial burial of the Scott Morrison era.is needed now more than ever to meet the challenges and threats of a less certain world, to shape that world for the better, and build a stronger, more co-operative Indo-Pacific region that respects sovereignty,” Albanese declared.
The greater priority then was to pursue closer ties with Beijing rather than risk diplomatic irritation with a country that had argued the Quad’s real aim was to “contain” China.over the last several years means such concerns are now far outweighed by the determination to build stronger alliances, primarily as a bulwark against any further moves by China. The recent resuscitation of the Quad is now considered crucial to that.
“In a short time, we have shown the Quad isn’t just a passing fad,” he said. “We mean business. We are here to get things done for the region.” Rather than opening any country’s markets to others’ goods through reduced tariffs and regulations, it is focused on increased co-operation in areas such as clean energy, internet policy and supply chains.Albanese’s agenda can fit neatly into this soft power framework.
