Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has called on the Senate to consider the government's Future Made in Australia policy 'on its own merits,' as he sought to pressure the Greens into supporting the ambitious renewables investment plan.
Anthony Albanese urges Senate to pass Future Made in Australia 'on its own merits' as he defends battery and solar investment
Without support from the opposition, the government will need to rely on the Senate crossbench and the Greens to pass the legislation, setting up potentially tough negotiations with the minor party. In an apparent response to those statements on Thursday, the Prime Minister urged Senators to focus on the legislation itself and not"a whole range of things that are not connected," as he made his case for the policy to pass Parliament."What we're not about is linking a whole range of things that are not connected. This is about whether we want to make things here. This is about Australian jobs.
Mr Albanese also hit out at arguments the government had ignored Treasury advice in formulating the policy, insisting more investment in batteries and solar would benefit Australia's economy and energy security. Renewable hydrogen, while commercially unproven, critical minerals processing and manufacturing of green metals, metals made using green energy, all represented a greater return on investment Treasury said.
