If you have a personality, social media is great. When Anthony Albanese called Peter Dutton a “boofhead” in ParliamentIt was the kind of thing a dad would say. Or a friendly teacher. For a second there, we all saw a bit of Albanese as a normal guy, pushing up against the stunning brawl that is our country’s question time.
Because let’s face it, the 24/7 news cycle and the voracious penetration of social media in our lives means political campaigning isn’t really confined to ballot timings. Full disclosure: I am a somewhat unhinged consumer of TikTok content. The insight into the lives of strangers around the world is really enjoyable.
I don’t post, but I consume. And like any social media user, I find myself parroting what I’ve seen that day to my friends at the pub. AOC, as she is called colloquially, has been speaking directly into her smartphone and to her electorate for years.Because she broadcasts her “authentic” self, and believes what she says, she doesn’t have to keep tabs on half-truths or re-position herself every time she posts.
