Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s lack of detail on the government’s plan to wipe $3 billion of student debt proves he is “all hat and no cattle,” shadow immigration minister Dan Tehan said.

Labor’s plan would see HECS debt indexed to either the Consumer Price Index or the Wage Price Index, depending which is lower, rather than inflation. Despite Labor’s plans to lower the rate, the Australian Tax Office still indexed student debt at 4.7 per cent on June 1 rather than the planned four per cent and 2023’s 7.1 per cent indexation rate is yet to be backdated to 3.2 per cent.

Mr Tehan’s outrage was shared with Liberal Senator Sarah Henderson who called out the Labor government after the ATO announced HECS indexation would not change.
