Potentially deadly baby product banned in UK as parents told to throw item away
The government has issued an Urgent Safety Alert over a baby product which is says should not be sold and can never be used safely.
The Office for Product Safety and Standards issued the warning over baby self-feeding pillows and said anyone who owns one should immediately get rid. The products are designed to hold baby bottles in place without the involvement of another person but are considered to be highly unsafe. According to he OPSS, the products, which are also known as prop feeders, can never be used safely and present a risk of serious harm or death from choking or aspiration pneumonia. This is when food or drink enters the lungs rather than the stomach and can prove fatal.Anyone who owns such a product is advised to stop using it immediately and dipose of it. Meanwhile businesses are being warned that the products do not comply with legal safety requirements and must not be sold.
The OPSS said: "Businesses selling these products must immediately remove them from the market as they cannot comply with the safety requirements under the General Product Safety Regulations 2005. Baby self-feeding pillow products are designed to be attached to a bottle so that the baby may be positioned on its back to self-feed without the assistance of a caregiver holding the bottle and controlling the feed.
"This is inconsistent with NHS guidance in relation to safe bottle feeding. When used as intended, even whilst under the supervision of a caregiver, it could lead to immediate, serious harm or death from choking or aspiration pneumonia."
