Australia’s former foreign minister Alexander Downer has provided fresh insight into the Israel-Hamas conflict two and a half years after predicting “violence and something of a war” over the Abraham Accords.
During a May 2021 interview with Sky News Australia host Chris Kenny, Mr Downer predicted that Iran would use Hamas as a “proxy” to halt the normalisation of ties between Israel and the Arab world.“They wouldn’t get those rockets through a factory there in Gaza, they’re provided by the Iranians.”
The accords marked the first instance of Israel establishing diplomatic relations with an Arab country since 1994 and was followed by the normalisation of ties with Morocco and Sudan in 2020 and 2021 respectively. "If they can incite violence and something of a war in Israel and the Palestinian territories that will help turn the Arab nations against Israel."
That agreement has now been effectively scrapped after the Hamas terror attacks resulted in a bloody and sustained siege on the Gaza strip by Israel. “Remember: the Iranians are smart and strategic choosing carefully how and when to attack Israel. We in the West are less cunning.”
