Ali Wong says her divorce from her ex-husband Justin Hakuta hasn't stopped them from being “best friends.”
star explained, “I'm still workshopping it, but the bones are there and it came to me very fast. This is the first hour I'm doing since I started where I'm single. I think we're going to call it the Single Lady tour.” Wong also addressed speculation that her previous comedy special,, played a role in the dissolution of her marriage.
What really surprised the comedian, however, is just how many people cared that they were getting a divorce at all. “I did not expect the announcement to be so widespread, but by far the hardest part about getting divorced was my mother's reaction,” she explained. “I had told her before that I thought we might get divorced, and she was really upset. She looked me in the eye and asked, ‘Can you just wait until I die?’ She was literally asking me to not live a life for myself.
Wong and Hakuta first met in 2010 at a friend's wedding reception when Hakuta was still a student at Harvard Business School and a Fulbright scholar. They hit it off and four years later in November 2014, the couple wed in San Francisco, welcoming their first daughter a year later. The comedian's representative confirmed the news of their split at the time, adding, “It's amicable and they will continue to co-parent lovingly.
