The town saw a dramatic increase in crime between 2021 and 2022, with alcohol bans introduced in certain areas to try and curb violence and property crime. 9News
Domestic violence-related assaults spiked even higher, up 65 per cent. Alcohol-related assaults were up 68 per cent.Property damage was up 55 per cent, and commercial break-ins were up 47 per cent.
The only decline in the statistics was in sexual assaults. Ten fewer sexual assaults were reported in 2022 from 2021, from 89 to 79.The assault rate in Alice Springs was five times higher per person than in Darwin. Alcohol bans have been brought in for many areas around Alice Springs in a bid to curb violence and property crime.
The latest data follows similar figures from Northern Territory Police earlier in the year, which covered statistics up to November 2022. However, yesterday's release covers the entire calendar year.
