I think it's a very helpful thing because when you're studying classical music, you hear about A-B-A structure and all these other things. It’s good to know all the stuff, and that’s what I learned when I was in college, but I think when you're doing rock, you're thinking more in terms of intro, verse, endings, chorus—the structures of rock. That comes in handy when you're trying to build something in music and in backscore because you’re kind of writing mini-songs for that.
I know that you drew a lot of influence from the composers for the Alien films. There have also been some really great Alien-universe games over the last few years. Austin Wintory did a great score for one two years ago. Were you trying not to step on anyone's toes, even though you’re all paying homage to the same thing or drawing from the same influences?
For Aliens, we broke things down into exploration, discovery, storytelling encounters, quick encounters, running away in fear and screaming, quick combats, and then separately we dealt with the boss fights. That’s usually composed separately because it's a big encounter and there aren’t a lot of those in a game. And, of course, the rest is all that other time you spend trying to get from point A to point B and trying not to get dead.
Doyle Donehoo: I knew that would kind of automatically happen anyway because I'd be doing my own themes and my own melodies and stuff. The only difference is… when John Williams did Star Wars, the music of Star Wars became the musical language of Star Wars, and I think the more composers strayed from that, the worse things were. The more composers went back to that style, the better off things were. You’re fortunate if you're the one who actually gets to create the musical language.
