Maybe producers should consider bringing in a new host for every series, like some sort of TV presenter jury duty
As ever, the series kicked off with Cake Week, the first of 10 themed weeks we have been promised will go “back to basics”. That means saying goodbye to the flimsy themes of series past and hello to challenges that even I could have a go at in my own kitchen.
Indeed, the first Signature task was simply to bake a cake. And while the challenge of creating vertical stripes of filling – as opposed to horizontal like a Victoria Sponge – sounded tricky, in reality all the bakers had to do was make an oversized Swiss roll and turn it on its side. This year’s bakers are a typically game bunch. Forty-two-year-old Dan from Cheshire emerged as an early contender for the series’ first Star Baker thanks to his near-perfect pink striped rhubarb and custard cake. Meanwhile, Herefordshire intelligence analyst Saku cemented an early place in the nation’s hearts when she admitted to Paul Hollywood that she was “very nervous”, which led to her bypassing the famous Hollywood handshake and receiving a rare Hollywood hug.
