The Center for Refugee Services held the three-day gift distribution event to share about 2,000 toys with children from the Afghan refugee community in San Antonio.SAN ANTONIO — A brown shawl covered 10-year-old Bibiasma Elham’s hair as she welcomed people who arrived in San Antonio with few possessions.
The center provides aid to immigrants from more than 20 countries, including Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Myanmar and Sudan. Client services include teaching job readiness, offering English as a Second Language classes and health and wellness support. “The city has been generous as we’ve been given a large number of donations for this particular program,” Sherrill said. “It’s going to be successful because of the openness and generosity of San Antonio.”Parents left carrying white plastic bags bulging with wrapped gifts. They also held bags heavy with donated clothing and undergarments.Rafiullah Safi, 32, hefted presents for his wife and three daughters; they have been in San Antonio for a year.
