Lawyers for Deputy Liberal Leader David Southwick say he cannot be sued for defamation for Opposition Leader John Pesutto’s comments, in response to a concerns notice issued last year.
Deputy state Liberal leader David Southwick has argued he cannot be held responsible for comments that his leader, John Pesutto, made about exiled MP Moira Deeming and would seek to dismiss defamation action if she pursues him in court.
The response went on to say that if Deeming commenced proceedings in court, Southwick would seek to summarily dismiss her claim.on condition of anonymity to speak frankly about the defamation claims and internal matters, characterised Southwick’s response as throwing Pesutto under the bus. “We just want fair treatment in the media,” he said. “I’m just telling you how we feel. We feel like we are treated less favourably than the government.”Southwick issued a statement on Tuesday, saying: “This matter is with my lawyers and I will not be commenting further. John, I and the Liberal team are focused on the real issues impacting Victorians as we head towards another horror Labor budget of new taxes and service cuts in just a few weeks’ time.
