Hussein Chamas, accused of fleeing drug rehab in NSW with forged bail documents, has been approved for extradition back to the state. Chamas was awaiting trial for drug and firearm offences after being apprehended at Sydney Airport in July 2023. He absconded from a rehab facility in Swan Bay on January 8th. Darwin Local Court chief judge Elizabeth Morris granted the extradition application, and Chamas expressed no opposition to returning to NSW.

Mr Chamas, who chose to represent himself, told the judge he did "not oppose being extradited to NSW".During proceedings Mr Chamas complained about the conditions inside the watch house.The judge said Mr Chamas would need to be held there for another week. The rehab centre Mr Chamas left, run by Global Connect, is the subject of an urgent NSW government review.
It also resolved to continue working with authorities including the police, the Department of Health, and local government to ensure that staff, on-site visitors, and residents were safe while at the facility.
