Police later located and arrested a 21-year-old Wildwood Crest man, authorities said.
A man who was allegedly driving impaired struck and seriously injured a pedestrian in South Jersey before fleeing the scene during the weekend, police said.
Police responded to a report of a crash at 1:51 a.m. on Saturday at Route 47 and 5th Street in the Rio Grande section of Middle Township in Cape May County, township police Capt. Tracey Super said. Officers on the scene located a 48-year-old female who had been struck by a vehicle and learned that the car had left the area, police said. Witnesses provided a description of a silver Nissan to officers.
Police later located and arrested Elijah Bethel, 21, of Wildwood Crest, authorities said. He was charged with driving while intoxicated, assault by auto and knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident with serious bodily injury, and was issued three motor vehicle summonses, according to court records.
