Alpine has signed Franco Colapinto as a test and reserve driver on a multi-year deal, raising questions about Jack Doohan's future as a race driver. This move potentially benefits Alpine's long-term plans and Colapinto's career trajectory.
"That's my claim to fame for cricket" | 05:10 Franco Colapinto has signed a multi-year deal with Alpine in a move that could spell trouble for Australian Jack Doohan .
“So we believe this agreement with Alpine represents Franco’s best chance of securing a race seat in 2025 or 2026,” Vowles said. Doohan is still expected to get the first shot after spending three seasons as Alpine’s reserve driver, and made his F1 debut at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix after the team agreed to release Esteban Ocon ahead of his move to Haas.Nonetheless, Colapinto’s arrival only places more pressure on Doohan to perform, with the Argentine to attend a series of grands prix during the 2025 F1 season and share testing of the team’s previous cars with Ryo Hirakawa and Paul Aron.
“I have to get the team in the right condition to get results and the driver is the one who has to conclude the work of nearly 1,000 people behind him. Everyone works for just two people. “Alpine is of course not in the sort of dire situation financially that Force India so regularly was back when Perez became its lynchpin, before Lawrence Stroll took over, but there is more obviously a focus on shrinking costs at Alpine now it’s transitioning from being a fully fledged Renault works outfit into a much leaner Mercedes customer team.
“Prove the doubters wrong, or be moved aside. The signing of Colapinto is irrelevant in that. It’s a performance business and that’s all Doohan has to do to condemn this story to the history books.”The Athletic’s Luke Smith wrote
