But it would be a mistake to suggest this is simply some exercise in patriotism. It is an unabashed celebration not of the institution of the Crown, but the individual who wears it. “No monarch by her efforts and dedication and achievement better deserves the attribute of greatness and for me, she is already Elizabeth the Great.”

A lemon Swiss roll-inspired pudding won a nationwide baking contest to dedicate a dessert to the Queen, while BBC Radio listeners voted Neil Diamond’s 1969 hitas the song of the Platinum Jubilee, to be sung across the country at street parties and gatherings. “Because of the national significance, it is definitely adding something,” he said. “I have to be calm,” he says, of flying at more than 1000 km/h, “otherwise the team get nervous”.
