Hongchi Xiao allegedly 'congratulated' Danielle Carr-Gomm, 71, when she stopped taking insulin at his four-day retreat where he performed paida lajin, a Chinese holistic therapy.
An alternative healer who believes Western medicine is 'evil' failed to get life-saving insulin for a diabetic grandmother as she laid dying at a 'slap therapy workshop', a court heard today.
Accused of manslaughter, Xiao is said to have refused to call for urgent medical intervention and led patients to think that Mrs Carr-Gomm's worsening condition was a 'healing crisis'. Prosecutors told jurors he had 'entrenched' views that medicines like insulin are 'poison' and instead believes in the 'curative powers of paida lajin'.
Paida lajin means 'slap and stretch' in Chinese, and involves practitioners like Xiao slapping patients all over their body to apparently expel 'poisonous waste'. 'In short, therefore he chose to congratulate a diabetic who stopped injecting, rather than to persuade them not to take so grievous a risk to their life.' Others attending the workshop who had 'received and accepted' Xiao's teaching believed Mrs Carr-Gomm's condition was a part of healing.
