A good manager knows how hard constructive criticism is to give, but they need to give it: Your co-worker needs to be told they’re doing a poor job passing judgement on your work. | WORK THERAPY

I have a colleague who criticises my work. In the beginning, the criticism was firm but usually fair. Now it feels to me as if it often gets personal, unhelpful and even a tad nasty.I used to believe I was mature and good at taking on feedback. Now I am worried I have a thin skin. Or I’m working in the wrong job. Maybe it is both of these. What do you think? Thanks for your email. Thanks also for giving up your time, and being so candid in the exchange that followed.

With this in mind I’d say there’s some chance the problem here is the quality of your work or your inability to take criticism well. Some, but not a lot at all. However, that doesn’t explain why it’s become personal and nasty. If I was going to make a more cynical guess, I’d say your critic may be quite calculating and is taking advantage of your good will. They know you won’t respond in kind and so have become progressively more confident in dispensing ever-harsher disparagement wrapped in a thin package labelled “my wisdom”. There is no genuine desire to help any more, if there ever was, and this is now just an ugly attempt to bring down a co-worker.
