The battle of the online marketplaces is in full flight among three giants: US Amazon, Wesfarmers and Woolworths.
Amazon arrived in Australia in 2017 to a big splash, but has not dominated the market as some expected. It did, however, force most retailers to accelerate digital investments and improve delivery times, which have affected company earnings.
Prime members can expect deals across more than 100,000 products from big brands such as Apple, Barbie, Bosch and Lego and small local businesses including Orbitkey , Nakie and the Doggie Balm Co .“We’re going to have local deals running for 48 hours, but then on top of that Australians can take advantage of the global store offers … so you can get products from the US and also from the UK,” Ms Menzies said.
Prime Day is one of the biggest shopping events of the year, and offers reduced prices to its members. It started in the US in 2015 to mark the company’s 20th birthday, and made its way to Australia about five years ago.Amazon has doubled its operational footprint this year, with six fulfillment centres plus its new robotics fulfillment centre in western Sydney, which will support many of the small and medium-size Australian businesses that use Fulfilment by Amazon.
Mr Kierath said in the past couple of years Amazon had expanded its physical presence and had Prime membership household penetration of more than 30 per cent.Amazon has significantly increased website visitation since before the COVID-19 pandemic, relative to peers.
