A third series in AMC’s “The Walking Dead” universe has gotten the green light for a 2020 debut, the network announced Monday.
The new show will be headlined by two young female protagonists and revolve around the first generation to grow up in the post-apocalyptic “Dead” universe. Of course, the characters will split into heroes and villains in the new drama created by “TWD” mastermind and chief content officer Scott M. Gimple and show veteran Matt Negrete.Negrete, who has been a writer and producer on the original series for five seasons, will be the new incarnation’s showrunner, AMC said.
“We’re thrilled that the Dead will keep walking into a new corner of the post-apocalyptic world, a corner that will present stories and characters unlike any that ‘The Walking Dead’ has dramatized thus far, and that is bound to excite one of the most passionate fanbases in television,” said David Madden, president of programming for AMC Networks and AMC Studios, in a statement.
“Showing audiences an unseen pocket of ‘The Walking Dead’ Universe steeped in a new mythology is a very cool way to celebrate a ‘Decade of the Dead’ on TV and over fifteen years of Robert Kirkman’s brilliant comic,” Gimple said in the network’s release. Production on the first 10 episodes in the as-yet-unnamed series begins this summer in Virginia.
