Both major parties have supported an amendment so Victorians with a valid prescription for medicinal cannabis will no longer automatically lose their licence.

Medicinal cannabis users who test positive to drugs in random roadside tests will no longer automatically lose their drivers licence.

An amendment has passed state parliament's upper house that will give magistrates the power to use their discretion when sentencing people who have tested positive to tetrahydrocannabinol in a random roadside test if they were unimpaired at the time and hold a valid prescription.

Australia legalised medicinal cannabis in 2016 for patients diagnosed with cancer, multiple sclerosis and other conditions.
