The troops were betrayed by their leaders. They were sacrificed to the delusions of presidents and prime ministers, the hubris of their high officials and the mistakes of their strategists. Former US president George W Bush declared the Iraq war over after six weeks. It continued for years.Today, the US has decided to quit Afghanistan because it has given up on it. “Leaving proves Osama bin Laden right: Eventually, America cuts and runs,” is the acerbic assessment ofIt has been the longest war in the very long list of America’s wars.

When pressed by reporters earlier this month on America’s withdrawal from Afghanistan, Biden changed the subject: “I want to talk about happy things.”
