It’s not just New York’s famous club scene that’s buzzing at 12.30am — there’s a real-life drama unfolding just around the corner.
Deep in the heart of Manhattan, a man in handcuffs is standing in front of a judge, listening to a string of firearms and assault charges as a crowd of lawyers hum around him and solemn family members watch from wooden benches.
The 29-year-old has been through the system himself, and now he and his brothers are watching as their father applies for bail. “I hate the way they treat you,” says Eddie. “They treat human beings as dogs.” “They house 11-year-old kids with adults. It was the most scariest, dirtiest place I’ve seen in my life.”
The sullen-looking teenager limps up to the judge, but has to ask for a chair, with his bloody wound visible through the side of his grey tracksuit pants.
