This is a much-needed and long overdue as a skewering of white, bourgeois hypocrisy.
It’s difficult to satirise the United States today, as reality keeps going places fiction fears to tread. Wind back the clock 10 years, and nobody could have predicted the proto-fascist excesses of the Trump era, in which every form of bigotry now seems to be a vote-winner. Hardly less alarming is the collapse of so-called left-wing politics into a morass of hanky-wringing sensitivities about race and gender, combined with a desire to exterminate anyone who questions these political pieties.
Monk is respectfully sent off for a sabbatical, returning to spend time with his family in Boston. This turns out to be an even bigger headache, as his elderly mother, Agnes , is showing the first symptoms of Alzheimer’s and expenses are piling up. His sister, Lisa , has a heart attack while they are out at lunch, while his estranged brother, Clifford , has just come out of the closet and is making a shambles of his life.
