An American multi-millionaire purchases the only living foal of Australia's greatest racehorse, Winx, for $7.5 million at a yearling sale in Warwick Farm.

Training great Bart Cummings was famous for his one-liners, and perhaps an underrated gem was the day he walked into a yearling sale on the lookout for his next champion.

The man taking his instructions down the line is Mark Webster, chief executive of Inglis, the company running the sale. He smiles as private-equity tycoon John Stewart keeps feeding him new bids that read like telephone numbers. Five million dollars. Six million. Why wait? Straight to $7.5 million.and was prepared to break his record for buying expensive horses, which stood at $9 million since he started spraying cash like confetti at yearling sales around the world last year.

The filly, who is yet to be named, has had around-the-clock security outside her stall and the past 48 hours have been pandemonium, with buyers and sticky-beakers crowding around for a glimpse of the famous exhibit. By the time she is taken out of her box to enter the sale ring, a coterie of iPhone cameras are ready to capture the moment. But the question remains: will she actually be any good?“The good ones just don’t produce good horses,” they grumble.

By the end of it, there is no one more relieved than the man who had to hold her as she paraded in front of thousands on onlookers who are told to hold their applause at the end of the 130-second sale so as not to spook the horse.
