Americans who see bipartisanship as weak must find ways to come together

Presidential centers around the country including the George W. Bush Institute are rallying behind democratic principles in favor of bipartisanship.

Too many people now see bipartisanship as a weakness. There are three reasons for this, Kolbe told me and a room full of people at a think tank in Washington back in 2010: gerrymandering, fundraising and cable news.

Unless the candidate or elected official is independently wealthy, members become beholden to those who fund their campaigns rather than their constituents. The need for constant fundraising means that members spend a disproportionate amount of time, once elected, on raising money for their re-election. Attending fundraisers usually takes them out of D.C., reducing the amount of time they interact with other members.
