“This huge man saw my translator and tried to grab her, and I literally jumped into the middle of him and told her to run away. He grabbed me, and his whole hand was so huge it fit all the way around my neck, and he lifted me, put his sweaty face up to mine, and screamed at me in Russian. “I went on to start my documentary work as a teenager, learning about the discrimination and disparities between schools in Durham, NC, for African American communities and those for white children.
