Amid Georgia's NFL talent, there's 'unwanted' QB Stetson Bennett who is second consecutive title game
Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett was alternately erratic and poised in leading Bulldogs past Ohio State to national title game against TCU.ATLANTA — The University of Georgia football program spent $3.6 million on recruiting in fiscal year 2019, but it didn’t have to spend any of that record sum on quarterback Stetson Bennett. He breezed into Athens on his own dime after junior college, “a lifelong Bulldog” from Blackshear, 227 miles south of UGa.
“They come at you in waves,” said one NFL scout, who is not permitted to talk on the record about prospects.in the title game readying for TCU on Jan. 9 “He made the dude fall. Dude can do things that people can’t do,” Bennett said of Smith. “He can run like people can’t run, and he can go get the ball, and I was just — once I saw him — I think the whole sideline was standing up and saying he’s open. So I just tried to put it on him and let him do the rest.”
When he got on the field in 2020 and 2021, the word “Interim” should have been stitched on the back of Bennett’s jersey. Smart even said there were times he didn’t want Bennett out there.
